To work most comfortably with the Tool Palettes window, you can adjust its display options. These options are the same as for the DesignCenter, discussed previously in this chapter. An additional option, Transparency, opens the Transparency dialog box. When the tool palette is transparent, you can see the drawing through it. You can specify the amount of transparency or turn it off. Then click OK.

Unfortunately, all too often this ideal falls somewhat short of what actually happens. Sometimes, you have to reconfigure your hardware. Other times, you must reinstall it in order to get it to work. At still other times, you may simply want to upgrade the software components to take advantage of new or improved features. Windows XP offers a host of wizards and dialog boxes to help you work with your hardware s drivers and settings, but the most important tool, Device Manager, provides the central focus for this chapter. Windows XP also contains a number of tools for maintaining your system. Because your hard drives constitute the single most important hardware component to maintain, this chapter also covers hard disk maintenance tools. Between Device Manager and the hard drive utilities, you can keep the hardware on your system humming along smoothly.

Business consultants and software information system vendors often bundle a KM initiative with other flavors of the month, from process reengineering and empowerment to various forms of teams. However, although Knowledge Management may be a component of other management initiatives, it s often best addressed as a distinct entity. For example, although many vendors include a KM component in most process reengineering efforts, implementing both simultaneously is at best a waste of time and resources. A KM initiative typically involves documenting and sharing information about what is, whereas process reengineering is about designing what should be. Knowledge Management is best applied in times of stable processes and as a follow-on to a reengineering effort, not as a parallel process. As illustrated in Exhibit 2.4, this means that KM activities should be avoided during and immediately following process reengineering and major hiring or downsizing activities, whether they are related to the reengineering effort or not. Many KM initiatives fail because Knowledge Management is performed in parallel with a reengineering initiative. Consider Mary s experience with Medical Multimedia, in which she first deals with process reengineering and then with Knowledge Management. Only after the processes surrounding handling of multi47
